Depuis la création de l'Institut Mérieux à la fin du XIXe siècle, l'intérêt de Lyon pour les maladies infectieuses, humaines et animales, n'a cessé de croître, faisant de la ville un centre international de référence pour la recherche académique et industrielle, et pour la production de diagnostics, de vaccins et d’antimicrobiens. La spécialisation "Infectiologie" du Master BMC  a été créé en réponse à la menace croissante que représentent les maladies infectieuses pour les sociétés et à la nécessité de former des personnes hautement qualifiées pour la recherche fondamentale, translationnelle et industrielle sur les maladies infectieuses.
